Narrative

A lot of people when they think of the US Air Force Academy they think of cadets, airplanes, and football.  What most people do not think about is the great hiking that the Academy has to offer.  The Academy to me seems to be one of these locations in Colorado Springs that locals know is a great outdoor destination that has yet to be well known outside the city.  Locals can be often be seen hiking, jogging, and mountain biking all over the various trails in and around the Air Force Academy:

Narrative

After a recent snowfall struck the Pikes Peak region I used it as an opportunity to go snowshoeing on a local trail that I had not tried yet.  Over the past two years I have been slowly completing all 20 hikes in the guide book, “The Best Colorado Springs Hikes (Colorado Mountain Club Pack Guides)” and the Lovell Gulch Trail outside Woodland Park was still one I needed to complete.  Due to the recent snowfall I decided to get out my snowshoes and try out this trail.  Getting to Woodland Park from Colorado Springs is very easy by taking Highway 24 North through Ute Pass to the city:

Narrative

This winter I have been spending a lot of time hiking in North Cheyenne Canon in Colorado Springs, Colorado because of how the heavy snow in the high country has made the avalanche conditions very dangerous to back country travelers.  In areas with smaller mountains such as around Colorado Springs there really is no avalanche danger and thus it is safe to hike the various trails in the area.  The latest trail I decided to hike was the St. Marys Falls Trail.  I have hiked up to the falls a number of times before, but I have never hiked up there during the winter.  So I drove over to North Cheyenne Canon in southeastern Colorado Springs to access the trail.

Picture from Roxborough State Park

Narrative

One of my favorite Colorado State Parks is located just a short drive from Denver, every time I go there I am always surprised how few people visit the park compared to the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.  Roxborough State Park is basically the Denver equivalent of the Garden of the Gods, but despite being located so close to the major metropolitan area of Denver it does not seem to get the same number of visitors as the Garden of the Gods which can get crazy crowded on weekends.  For those of us who know about this park this is actually a good thing so hopefully my posting here doesn’t cause a mad rush of people to start visiting the park!  ;-)

Picture from Roxborough State Park

Roxborough State Park is accessed by Highway 85 that runs between Castle Rock and Denver.  Since I travel to the park from Colorado Springs I exited at Castle Rock on to Highway 85 and headed north towards Denver.  I then took a left at Titan Road which eventually begins traveling South and turns into Rampart Range Road that leads to the park:

East Castlewood Canyon Hike

Narrative

On my four year old daughter’s birthday she wanted me to take her hiking.  So I tried to find a trail that was close to being four miles long for her four year old birthday.  I settled on a hike through Castlewood Canyon State Park that was close to four miles long and included terrain that she would enjoy.  The park is very easy to access since it is located about an hour drive north of Colorado Spring on Highway 83:
