Queensland Rapist Gets Year in Jail

Maybe it is just me but it seems like Australia gives out extremely light jail sentences:

A TEACHER who raped a 13-year-old student after telling her "she was going to learn how to be a good girlfriend" has been jailed for 12 months.

Outside Brisbane District Court today one of his victims, now 19, blasted the length of the sentence, saying: "It is so upsetting that the sentence is so short for raping a teenager three times, he deserves to be in jail for longer."

"(But) a lot of the pain was that no one believed us and this is like vindication, it is a relief to hear him say guilty," she said.

The court was told Warren David Schneider, 39, abused four girls at the Redeemer Lutheran College at Rochedale, south of Brisbane, between 2000 and 2002.

Justice Michael Shanahan labelled the offending as "an extremely serious breach of trust."  [Jason Gregory - Courier-Mail]

I was talking to my boss at work about the light jail sentences in Australia and he agreed the sentences are light and he said it is because Australia doesn’t have much jail compacity thus shorter sentences are given to avoid over-crowding in the jails.
