Victoria to be Speed Ticket Free?

» by Dobbs in: Victoria

At least that is what the Victorian police say is going to happen:

POLICE officers in Victoria have overwhelmingly voted to back a bid for a 5 per cent pay rise with industrial action including bans on speeding fines.  More than 8500 of the state’s 11,000 police officers responded to a secret ballot on whether to take industrial action.

Of those, 8451 - or 98.7 per cent - voted for the action, with just 109 voting against and five informal votes.  Police Association Victorian secretary Paul Mullett said it was a resounding result and the industrial action would begin on August 21.

The action will include bans on issuing speeding fines and refusing to give data or advice to government agencies.

It is going to be interesting to see how motorists here in Victoria are going to respond to the police refusing to give out speeding tickets and if any increases in accidents is going to happen because of it.  The issue over the wage raise for police in Victoria is a big issue here and it appears they may be compromising safety of the roads in order to get their wage increase.  I’m not sure if this is the best way to go about getting a wage increase. I don’t like getting speeding tickets as much as the next guy, but also don’t want to travel on these single lane roads here in Victoria with people treating them like the autobahn either.
