The David Hicks saga is a story that no one in America knows or cares about, but here in Australia it has taken on a life of it’s own. Finally the US government is going to put this guy on trial:
David Hicks’ father Terry found little comfort in the government’s hope his son would be among the first Guantanamo Bay detainees to face trial under the soon-to-be-enacted US military commissions.
While US President George W Bush has assured Prime Minister John Howard the Adelaide-born terror suspect will be dealt with quickly, Terry Hicks said the government’s lack of "guts" is the main reason his son has been in Guantanamo Bay for five years without charge.
Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said today his US counterpart Alberto Gonzales told him there was enough evidence to finally charge Hicks.
Mr Ruddock also confirmed Mr Bush’s assurances to Mr Howard.
"The prime minister has spoken to the president and was given the assurance that David Hicks’ trial would be amongst the first," Mr Ruddock told reporters in Sydney today.
You wouldn’t believe how many people here have asked me about David Hicks and at first all I can say is "David who"? Hopefully he gets his trial so people quit asking me about it.
